Gotham FC’s 2-0 win over Utah Royals on Sunday secured the club’s first NWSL Shield and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. It also added a regular-season crown to a club story built, so far, around winning from the bottom of the postseason bracket.

Gotham says its NWSL Championship titles in 2023 and 2025 came as the lowest seed in the playoffs. Those victories established the club as a postseason winner; the Shield recognizes a different achievement: finishing first across the regular season. The distinction makes this more than another trophy in the cabinet.

The finale offered a tight window into the race. Guro Reiten scored in the ninth minute, moments after San Diego, Gotham’s only Shield challenger, had scored its own go-ahead goal. The goal was Reiten’s first for Gotham, and the club’s report says it sent the 11,209 fans at Sports Illustrated Stadium into a frenzy. Jaedyn Shaw, back after missing two matches with a knee injury, added the second in the 80th minute. Rose Lavelle also returned after missing the previous match with a neck injury.

Gotham’s account of the match shows a side that created more than the two goals suggest: it recorded 29 touches in Utah’s penalty area to Utah’s 10, three big chances to none, and expected goals of 1.5 to 0.5. Gotham had 55 percent possession. Those are figures from one match, not a standalone explanation for the club’s season, but they describe a convincing finish to it.

Coach Juan Carlos Amorós said the team had set a target “to be consistent, to be always ready to win, to play our way.” Gotham’s reported season record gives that aim a concrete measure: 18 wins and 61 points, both club records, along with a club-record 14 shutouts. The club also says it set records for wins, points and shutouts this season.

The Shield does not replace Gotham’s playoff success; the club will now enter the postseason as the top seed, with home-field advantage in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. It changes the shape of that success. After two championships won from the lowest seed, Gotham has now shown it can finish the regular season at the top, too. Gotham’s match report details the result, the club’s history and its season records.
