Methodology

How our records and analysis are made, checked and corrected.

Our data

Notebook FC covers the NWSL, the Women’s Super League and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Match, player and team data is checked before publication. Photographs and club shields are used under licence.

Where a fact has not been recorded, the page leaves it out and says so where it matters. We do not estimate a missing result, fill a gap with an earlier figure or present a guess as a record. When part of a page cannot be loaded, the page says it is unavailable rather than showing something else in its place.

Results, fixtures and tables

  • Results show the final score with the goals and cards in the order they happened, and the lineups with the time of each substitution.

  • Kickoff times are shown in US Eastern time, with the zone beside each time.

  • Matches are grouped into a numbered matchweek only where the league’s own round is known; otherwise they are listed by date.

  • Standings are calculated from the recorded results and say how many results they count; they are not the official standings. Home, away and form tables rank by points, then goal difference.

  • Form is a club’s last five results, oldest first: W for a win, D for a draw, L for a loss.

Player and club statistics

  • NWSL season totals combine every club a player has played for that season. Champions League totals keep a line for each club.

  • Champions League totals count every match played this season, qualifying rounds included. Some match figures, such as shots and passes, are recorded for only some matches, so we do not show them as season totals. A dash marks a total that could not be read in full.

  • Rates per 90 minutes count only players with enough minutes for the rate to mean something, and the page states the threshold. Finishing compares goals with expected goals for players with 900 or more minutes.

  • Expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) are model estimates of the quality of a chance, not counts of events. We label them as such wherever they appear.

  • What stands out lists facts calculated from the season record, such as the widest gap between goals and expected goals or a club’s share of goals, each with the next best for comparison. Notes on club and player pages are calculated the same way, from the record on that page.

Articles, Briefs, Exhibits and Experiences

  • Articles report a development such as a transfer, a result or a player’s return. They are written with the help of automated writing tools from published reporting, primary sources and our recorded data, and they link the sources they rely on. Before an article is published it is checked separately: every figure must match the record and every claim must be supported, and one that fails is not published.

  • Briefs are short analyses of a match or a run of form, checked the same way. Each carries its date; a corrected Brief is marked as corrected, with its version number.

  • Exhibits are charts with a short story. Each states the period it covers and the date of its data, and can be read as a table.

  • Experiences are interactive explorations, such as how a race for the table could finish. Figures from a simulation are labelled as modelled, not presented as a record or a prediction.

  • Pictures are chosen by Notebook FC from our licensed library to match a story’s clubs and players. Readers do not search or browse the library.

Stories and Notes

Stories from our editorial desk are reviewed by an editor before they are published. Notes are short thoughts by named writers.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, please tell us through Contact. We correct errors in the record and in our analysis as soon as we can confirm them.

Independence and advertising

Notebook FC is independent of the leagues, their clubs and their players. Advertising is shown in labelled spaces between sections of a page, never inside a table or a story, and advertisers have no say in what we publish or where it appears.
