Manchester United’s 1-1 derby draw with Manchester City on October 25 turned on a physical first half and a late response after falling behind. WSL Football’s matchweek-seven roundup says United’s game plan nullified much of City’s attacking threat before the break. After Khadija Shaw put City ahead, United kept creating chances and Elisabeth Terland equalised just before stoppage time.
City had won their opening six league games and scored 19 goals, according to WSL Football’s preview. United arrived on a three-game league winning streak. City had also won both league derbies 3-0 the previous season, though United had beaten them in the Women’s FA Cup.
The preview’s form guide made the first half’s 0-0 score a significant achievement for United. The roundup describes a physical approach that frustrated City and limited their clear chances. United looked for openings on the counter through Ella Toone, Andrea Medina and Terland.
City eventually broke through after the interval. Shaw, making her 100th WSL appearance, scored her eighth league goal of the season after turning against Dominique Janssen and finding space to shoot past Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Shaw finished with eight shots, more than any other player in the match. City had been contained for a half, not silenced.
United responded to the goal with chances of their own: Julia Zigiotti Olme shot over, and Jess Park hit the woodwork. Then Shaw tried to head the ball clear in the penalty area. It fell to Terland, who struck it into the net just before stoppage time.
The draw ended City’s perfect league start. Shaw’s goal and shot total show the threat United still faced; the score stayed within reach because United limited City before the break and continued to attack after conceding. Terland’s late finish turned that persistence into a point.
